Our Hereford Journey so far…
In 2015, while still beekeeping, Bryce and Sue Hooton brought a block of land at Coroglen with the intention of planting it all in Manuka for honey. A year later they changed their minds and decided to get into cattle.
They wanted something personal that they could take a real interest in. They tossed up between Angus and Hereford, deciding to go with the Herefords because of their reputation for being quiet and easy to handle. It’s been a great choice, especially as Bryce is totally blind and enjoys being very hands on!
They bought 8 in-calf heifers in March 2016. After 30 years beekeeping, they sold their business in Matamata and moved permanently to their beach house at Cooks Beach in June 2016, straight into calving in July. They’ve built up to 30 cows which they feel is their maximum number to run. Now they have to decide each year who’s staying and who’s going. They do one day of AI and one round of the bull to keep a short calving and decide the fate of the less fertile.
Robert Redford Q287
We’ve been really excited to have an opportunity to purchase a package of Injimira Robert Redford Q287 of which we have just used for the second year running this AI. We had a 72% rate at scanning in calf to AI last week. Calving was so good with no cows needing any help. Our heifers calved very well to him too.
We have really concentrated on getting good even figures with lower birthweights but good growth and fats and muscling.
